Hot Sauce Recipe: Taco Bell Green Hot Sauce

I found a great copycat Hot Sauce Recipe that some I know some of you are craving for – Taco Bell’s Green HOT SAUCE!

For many Hot Sauce purists, this recipe might not be your first choice when deciding which hot sauce to stir up. But this green sauce’s simple preparation requirements and proven fantastic taste – especially for producing in large batches :p – make the recipe one that’s hard to completely ignore.

Green Hot Sauce Ingredients

  • 1lb of fresh Tomatillos

  • 3 large seeded jalapeno peppers

  • 1 medium chopped onion

  • 2 cloves of garlic

  • 6 sprigs of cilantro with stems removed

  • 2 cups of chicken broth

  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Hot Sauce Preparation

Cloning Taco Bell’s green hot sauce recipe will take the average chiles-monger less than 30 minutes to complete and the recipe is about average difficulty.

So let’s get started!

First, remove the husks from the tomatillos and cut them in half. Next, boil the tomatillos and seeded jalapeno peppers in the chicken broth for 10 minutes.

After straining the tomatillos and peppers – making sure to keep the broth – combine the all the ingredients sans the oil, and blend it finely.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a pan and then add the blended mixture, cooking it for about 5 minutes. Stir the blend until it becomes dark and thick. Add the broth to the mixture and then bring it all to a boil.

Reduce the heat and let it simmer until the sauce thickens. The thickening process takes about 10 minutes and make sure you stir it!

Try out the Sauce!

Although the Taco Bell Green Hot Sauce clone is probably best used on Taco Bell tacos, I’d say you could put it on just about everything, including plain noodles and peanuts (Thai style!).

What do you think?
